More googlings

Here be more of my google searches, what I found and why.

Search one: Microsoft XP Aquarium Screensaver

Why? My sister has the Aquarium Screensaver and I quite liked it so I thought I'd search for it.
Turned out every site I visited was rubbish. The files either had viruses or were pay-for. Now, I'm not stupid and I'd never pay for a screensaver, no matter how pretty!
In the end I gave up on that particular search.

Search two: Free mobile themes for Samsung SGH M150.

Why? I'd bought a new phone (£20 at Tesco) and wanted to customize it a bit. I found several sites that claimed things were free, none of them were.
A long way down the list of results I found Zedge which is an excellent site for free themes, wallpapers, ringtones and other mobile related stuff. You can enter your mobile phone model and it'll show you the things available on the site for that particular model. Easy, free stuff...just the way I like it :D

Search three: Who called me

Why? I'd been getting strange phone calls on my mobile from telephone numbers I didn't know and wanted to find out who they were from.
The first of two sites I used was: http://whocalled.us
The second was: http://whocallsme.com/

You just type the number in and click search. If someone has had calls from that number and logged it, it'll be there.
Two of my calls were well known scammers and another was a sales company with bad reviews of their telephone etiquette. I've found both sites really useful, since my last search.

Another place I'd recommend is http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/
It's the mail/telephone preference website where you can opt out of receiving junk mail and sales calls. Individuals and businesses can both register. It doesn't stop ALL sales calls/mail but the vast majority is wiped out and best of all, it's free :D

That's it for today. Next up will more than likely be holiday searches and dog sitting/kennels.....oh joy! :D

Take care,

K :)

In these hard times....

Money is a bit of an issue in the current times. We're in a 'credit crunch', recession...whatever you want to call it so what ever way we can save money, it's got to be good.

If there's only one site you visit today, make sure it's http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/

It is one of my favourite websites of all time, ever!

It was started years ago by Martin Lewis, whom you may have seen on various television programmes or heard on the radio. Like him or not, he's pretty money savvy!

This website isn't only for those with money struggles, it helps those who are better off but could be ever more better off if they switched utility company or reclaimed bank charges or whatever.

A year and a half ago (when there wasn't a hold put on the claims) I reclaimed over £5000 of bank charges for my mum and dad plus £1000 of my own, all with the help of this site.
I've saved money on my regular bills, got free stuff and read a lot of advice on various things.
Many companies out there charge you for information or to reclaim your bank charges for you, this website is 100% free.

When you first go to the site it can all seem a bit cluttered and hard to navigate so let me help you a little :-)

First off, you don't have to register but if you want to use the forums, I'd advise you to.

Next, register for the free weekly email. It has money off info and lots of really good advice. It's a once a week email, no more and comes packed with everything moneysaving.

Once you've done those things it's time to start exploring!

There are various tabs along the top of the main page, for instance: Cards/Loans, Reclaiming, Utilities, Travel/Transport etc etc. These all take you to the specific mini-sites of each category.

In these pages there are ways to cut back on your bills, legal loopholes, helpful advice, information on switching providers, various free tools/calculators and lots, lots more.

The forum is where you can ask for advice, give advice and do lots of other amazing stuff. There are 56 categories and many sub-sections so you'll be sure to find something of help/value.

The categories range from: House buying/renting, Savings/investments, Employment/Redundancy, Holidays/Days out/Entertainment, Consumer Rights, Freebies, Discount vouchers/codes, Local money saving and so on.

So just to reiterate, it's an amazing site, full of excellent info and it will save you money, if you take a little time to read some of the articles/forum posts and go from there :D

If this blog post helps just one person, I'll be glad :D

Take care,

Kelly :-)

Google Web History....huuuuge!

I have recently discovered that my Google Web History goes back to 2006!
Needless to say, I've been having a good old look to see what sites I've been using from then, until now.

Some that stand out:

http://www.w3schools.com/ - This was where I learnt my HTML, CSS, XML and various other web based stuff. I built my very first website using the tutorials and still refer to them now and again as my memory isn't what it once was!

http://www.theaa.com - Memorable to me because I used their directions to get to North Wales from Essex and they were rubbish! Took me the complete wrong way and into the back of beyond. This was before I got my £190.00 Sat Nav (which I then needed to sell. I got £20 at Cash Converters....am still fuming over that!)

http://www.badgerbadgerbadger.com/ - One of the funniest videos I've ever seen. I still can't work out why though!

http://www.tvadmusic.co.uk/ and http://nothingnet.proboards.com/index.cgi - There's always an advert on tv where you either like the music and want it or already know it but can't remember who/what/where/why/when. This is a good place to go to :)

http://england.shelter.org.uk/ - Fantastic website if you're going through housing worries. In 2006 I was in a spot of trouble and I called the freephone number and they helped me so much.

http://www.wellingtonarmssouthampton.co.uk/ - One of the best pubs in Southampton. Has lots of different Real Ales, a happy chappy landlord, Bob and a superb pub garden with lovely trees (sorry, private joke!).

This has taken me quite long enough so I'll be back later with (what's to become) the usual google searches.

Take care,

Kelly :)

Googlings

As mentioned in my first blog post, it's now time to add some of my google searches, my reasons behind them and the eventual site I clicked on.

Search One:

Why:
I have no phoneline in my flat and I prefer it that way. But what to do about internet access? Well, Mobile Broadband is the answer, for me.

I was on contract with '3' but that came to an end in February so seeing as though I had the broadband dongle already, I thought I'd go over to Pay As You Go (PAYG)....which incidentally works out cheaper for me. (I won't go off on one about the fact that companies charge you for NOT paying by Direct Debit...grrr)
I phoned the '3' Customer Services and asked how much it'd be for me to get a Mobile Broadband SIM on PAYG.....they told me it wasn't possible to use my existing dongle (on contact) with PAYG so I'd have to buy a brand new dongle and go from there. I knew that was absolute bo***cks though so went onto eBay and got myself a SIM for £0.99 including P&P...bargain!

So, I got my broadband SIM and top-up and it seems to me the PAYG service isn't as good as contract. Surely that cannot be?! Ah, but I'm sure it is.
You see, with PAYG I seem to get cut off every half an hour or so, then I have to spend 15 minutes trying to connect, restarting laptop, disconnecting dongle, reconnecting.....and finally it connects. Never had that problem with it on Contract.

Otherwise, it's very handy. Compared to non-mobile broadband it isn't really cheap. I pay £10 for 1GB and gives you a month to use it. I usually go over that so might start buying the £15 - 3GB top-up.
I was toying with the idea of moving to Vodafone as their speeds and service are apparently better, but that would mean spending out on a new dongle or messing around with the existing one and to be honest, I'd rather just go with the easy option!

Search Two:

Why?
I was watching Red Nose Day 2009 and there was a song I wanted but didn't know the name or artist. I had an inkling it was Adele so searched for that.

I went to http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00j6312 but couldn't find out the name of the song, it just mentioned a special performance by Adele.

So I went a few results down and found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Nose_Day_2009#Musical_Performances which states that Adele sang "Make You Feel My Love".

I couldn't find the actual performance on Red Nose Day but went to YouTube and found the video which can be found here. A beautiful song, in my opinion :-)

That's all for now, I'll post more soon.

Come and say hello :D

Welcome

Hello and welcome to my new blog.

I love the internet.

I also love Google. I’ve tried other search engines but nothing comes even close, for me.

I use Google every day. It’s never failed me yet.

I'm a jack of some trades, master of none....so I'm not writing about any particular subject I'm knowledgeable about, I couldn't if I tried!

So, I find other peoples’ google searches interesting. Call me weird! :-)

Then I thought, if I find others’ interesting, maybe someone might find mine interesting and/or useful. I could be wrong but there’s no harm in trying :-)

So in this blog I’ll be chatting nonsense mostly but amongst the drivel I'll be talking about the sites I use frequently, what I think about any particular news and more importantly, listing all my searches and the links I eventually click on...along with other things. I’m aiming to update it daily.

I'll be adding a few days worth of searches for you to peruse, soon :-)

Enjoy,

Kelly
